Engawa House

Project Profile

Engawa House is a renovation of a century-old cottage in Ivanhoe, Melbourne, by Inbetween Architecture. On a site of less than 400 square metres, two small additions provide just 15 square metres of extra space. Swapping the kitchen and dining areas improves circulation towards the rear garden, where a narrow deck draws on the Japanese engawa. Exposed timber rafters, glazed openings and a cedar bathtub enrich the connection between interior and garden while retaining the home’s established character. The project won the 2021 ArchiTEAM Awards category for Residential Alterations & Additions up to $500K.
